Install Guide — Danstack Video

This is the complete installation guide for Danstack Shoppable Video. It takes about ten minutes and needs no coding knowledge — you are copying a file into your theme, not writing anything.

You can read this before buying, to see exactly what installing it involves.

Before you start

Duplicate your theme first. In your Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes, find your live theme, click the menu and choose Duplicate. Install into the duplicate, check that everything works, then publish it. This means your live store is never at risk while you set up.

What you need:

  • A Shopify store on any Online Store 2.0 theme. Full cart integration is verified on Dawn (and Dawn-family themes) and Horizon. Other 2.0 themes get a generic fallback that still adds to cart correctly.
  • Your product videos as MP4 files. There is no video recording or editing involved — you supply the videos.
  • About ten minutes.

What is in your download

Your download contains the section file and, depending on your version, a separate JavaScript file:

  • shoppable-video.liquid — the section itself
  • shoppable-video.js — the section's JavaScript, if your version ships it separately
  • A copy of these instructions and your licence terms

If your download has only the .liquid file, everything is contained inside it and you can skip Step 1.

Step 1 — Upload the JavaScript file

Skip this step if your download contains no shoppable-video.js file.

  1. Go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. On your theme, click Edit code.
  3. In the left sidebar find the Assets folder and click Add a new asset.
  4. Choose the Upload file tab, select shoppable-video.js, and upload it.

The filename must stay exactly shoppable-video.js — the section looks for it by name.

Step 2 — Add the section file

  1. Still in Edit code, find the Sections folder in the left sidebar and click Add a new section.
  2. Name it exactly shoppable-video and click Done. Shopify creates the file with some placeholder content in it.
  3. Select all of that placeholder content and delete it, so the file is completely empty.
  4. Open shoppable-video.liquid from your download in any text editor, select all of it, and copy it.
  5. Paste it into the empty file in Shopify and click Save.

If you see a green save confirmation and no error, the code is installed.

Step 3 — Upload your videos

Videos are not uploaded inside the section — you upload them to Shopify first and then point the section at them.

  1. Go to Content → Files in your admin.
  2. Click Upload files and select your MP4 videos.
  3. When each one finishes uploading, click the link icon next to it to copy its URL. Keep these URLs handy — you will paste them in the next step.

Vertical videos (9:16, the same shape as an Instagram Reel) look best. Keep each file under about 10 MB where you can, so they load quickly for your shoppers.

Step 4 — Place the section and add your videos

  1. Go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize.
  2. Navigate to the page you want the videos on — your homepage, a product page, or any other page.
  3. Click Add section and choose the shoppable video section from the list.
  4. Click Add block to add your first video card. For each card:
    • Paste the video URL you copied in Step 3 into the Video URL field.
    • Set a cover image — this is the still frame shown before the video plays.
    • Tag up to five products to make shoppable inside that video.
  5. Repeat for each video. You can add up to 20 videos in one section.
  6. Click Save, then view your live store to check it.

Step 5 — Style it to match your store

Everything else is optional and lives in the section's settings panel in the customizer: colours, card size and spacing, corner radius, heading and body copy, button styling, the play icon, the discount badge, and whether the cart drawer opens automatically after someone adds to cart. There is a Hide background mode that removes the card chrome for a full-bleed layout. None of this needs code.

If something is not working

The section does not appear in the Add section list. The file name has to be exactly shoppable-video. Check the Sections folder for a typo, or a file that got named shoppable-video.liquid.liquid.

The section appears but the videos do not play. The video URL is usually the cause. Make sure you copied the file URL from Content → Files and not a link to the admin page, and that the URL ends in .mp4.

You see a Liquid error on the page. This almost always means the placeholder content was not fully deleted in Step 2, so some of Shopify's default code is still above or below the pasted section. Open the file, delete everything, and paste again.

Tapping a card does nothing. If your version ships a separate shoppable-video.js, check it was uploaded to Assets with exactly that filename.

Add to cart does not update your cart. The section detects your theme's cart automatically and falls back safely if it cannot. Message me with your theme name and I will check it.

What this section does not do

Stated plainly, so there are no surprises after you buy:

  • No video uploading inside the section. You upload MP4s to Shopify Files and paste the URL, as in Step 3. There is no drag-and-drop uploader, no YouTube or Vimeo embedding, and no automatic compression.
  • No captions or subtitles in the reel player.
  • No built-in analytics events. Video plays and in-reel add-to-carts are not reported to GA4 or the Meta Pixel beyond your storefront's own default tracking.
  • Settings labels are in English and are not wired to Shopify's translation system, so a multi-language store will not translate them automatically.
  • Each section is independent. You can add as many as you like across your store, but there is no shared library managing videos across them.

Your licence

Each purchase covers one live Shopify store, plus that store's development, staging and backup themes at no extra cost. You may modify the code for your own store, and you keep it permanently — there is no subscription and no expiry. Reselling, redistributing or installing it on additional or client stores is not covered. Need more than one store? Message me and I will quote you.

Full terms are in the Terms of Service, Section 6.

Stuck? Message me

Installation help is included with your purchase, and I answer messages myself. Most problems turn out to be a five-minute fix.

Send your order number, your store URL and theme name, and a screenshot or short screen recording of what you are seeing. I reply Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00 IST, usually the same day.

If you would rather not install it yourself, the done-for-you setup add-on is available on the product page — I install it on your theme and tag your first five products for you.
